    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Book Description:

Two aspects of biological research are major contributors to the progress in the understanding of cancer etiology and the development of new and improved cancer drugs. The sequencing of the human genome provides us with a basic overview of all our genes and gene products, and the insights into signaling pathways allow us to align crucial components of cellular regulation into an ordered functional context. A comparison of the genes in normal and in tumor cells shows that mutations in the DNA of a limited set of genes are responsible for the multiple stages of tumorigenesis and metastasis. Many of the affected genes, including oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes and genome stability genes, can be fitted into pathways. They encode molecules that stimulate tumor cell division or inhibit their death. Matching of therapeutic intervention with insights into the underlying molecular disease mechanism has already led to the development of drugs such as Herceptin and Glivec. The deregulation of pathways as a consequence of the altered biochemical function of mutated cancer genes provides the conceptual basis for future progress. Will it be possible to extrapolate this principle and derive more efficient drugs targeting cancer pathway components? Promising cell surface molecules, potential targets of monoclonal antibodies, and intracellular molecules with enzymatic activity, potential targets for low-molecular-weight synthetic inhibitors, have been identified. Our ability to predict the consequences of inhibition of such components, however, is still limited. For this reason, the development of targeted drugs remains a complex process, comprising rational and empirical elements. The state of development of tomorrow’s cancer drugs, directed against growth factors, growth factor receptors and intracellular signaling molecules with kinase activities, is described in this book.

The Natural West: Environmental History in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Book Description:

In "The Natural West," Dan Flores asserts that western environmental history cannot be explained by examining place, culture, or policy alone but should be understood within the context of a universal human nature. In this thought-provoking collection of essays, Flores intersperses scientific theory, literature, and personal reflection to explain many of our attitudes toward the environment. Topics range from animals and exploration to the environmental histories of particular western bioregions and, finally, to western restoration as the great environmental theme of the twenty-first century.

    Review:

A seminal book on bioregional history and ecohistory

Dan Flores picks up where he left off in Caprock Canyonlands and Horizontal Yellow to give an overview of the state of bioregional history in the American West, followed by some chapters applying those latest findings and approaches to some specific times and places.

There's a lot to learn here.

Flores puts "paid" to the Roussellian "eco-noble savage" idea of Paul Shepard. In Exhibit A, he notes how the Comanche, after becoming (allowing themselves to be?) co-opted by the global market, were exerting their own downward pressure on bison numbers.

He shows how sociocultural history and ecohistory meet in forming bioregionalism by documenting Utah Mormons' high hostility to environmentalism. In doing so, he nuances Powell's high praise for the environmental standards of Mormon communal development in the 19th century.

He talks about the southern Plains, Texas' Caprock, in a way that you too will lament there being no National Park there.

All of this done in an easy to read style.

One complaint: The title "The Natural West" is a bit misleading. After discussing how "the West" is actually composed of several dozen bioregions, Flores basically ignores anything west of the Rockies -- the Great Basin, Sonoran, Mohave and Upper Basin/Northwest deserts, the Sierras, Southern and Northern Cascades, and the various sections of Pacific Coast.

With that allowance, it's a great book.

    Review:

    Provides a Paul Shepard Critique

I would add to the previous review that the first chapter provides a critique of Paul Shepard's thesis that our society is broken, and will never become whole again until we return to our hunter-gatherer roots. I was interested in this because I am a big Paul Shepard fan and have not before seen a critique of his ideas from a source I can respect. I don't know that Flores even gets Shepard's ideas completely straight, and I wish he had devoted more space to his critique, but at least it's something to get you thinking about.

I hope I haven't turned off those looking for a more straight-forward natural history of the West and southern plains, because except for that first chapter, that's what this book is- and it's excellent in its digestible chapters on components of this region.

    Review:

    Getting under the hood

Everyone always loves the West -- people hike the mountains for adventure, they hide out in the small towns when they're broke, and they buy ranchettes when they have money. The West is like a big old classic car that symbolizes something dependable and that people love to get in and hit the road -- the loooong road. "The Natural West" is for those brave enough to get under the hood and see how that car operates.

"Environmental History" is a fairly recent discipline, coming out of conventional history meeting ecology and the changing understanding of what a human being really is. Dan Flores is a hip guy with a smart take on the whole field. He's out there hiking, taking photos (they're in the book), running his wolf-dog, building his adobe house, and fighting the exotic weeds on his acreage -- and all the time he's thinking, "How does this work? How does all this fit together?"

Not that he will hand you a lot of predigested answers. This book, broken into chapters by region, is a tool kit, a beginner's manual, a map to the territory. It's a place to start getting under the hood and finding out how the motor really works. He's handed you all the clues.

This is a book to keep on hand and return to. Every revisitation will reveal the beginning of a new trail.

    Book Description:

The Upper Paleolithic fossils of the Mladec caves, South Moravia, excavated at the end of the 19th century, hold a key position in the current discussion on modern human emergence within Europe and the fate of the Neanderthals. Although undoubtedly early modern humans - recently radio carbon dated to 31.000 years BP - their morphological variability and the presence of archaic features are indicative to some degree of regional Neanderthal ancestry. The beautifully illustrated monograph addresses - for the first time - the complete assemblage of the finds, including the human cranial, post cranial, teeth and jaw fragments of several individuals (most of them stored at the Natural History Museum Vienna) as well as the faunal remains and the archaeological objects. Leading scientists present their results, obtained with innovative techniques such as DNA analysis, 3D-morphometry and isotope analysis, which are of great importance for further discussions on both human evolution and archaeological issues.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Book Description:

Biotechnology is a rapidly moving field, which builds on the competence and interplay of many different disciplines; biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology and chemical engineering. The quantitative treatment of biological processes is today a prerequisite for both the design of new bioprocesses and the analysis of cellular function.
The present text is an extensively revised edition of the textbook first published in 1994. The quantitative treatment of bioprocesses is a central theme in this book. The book has been restructured to make it more easily accessible to the reader, the material has been updated and several new topics have been added in the text.
The focus is on the bioreactor and the processes that occur in the reactor, i.e. the coupling between the reactions occurring in the cell and its environment. The microbial cellular metabolism is the starting point in the treatment. Tools for the quantitative analysis of cellular functions - macroscopic mass balancing, thermodynamics of microbial processes, metabolic network analysis and kinetic modelling - are gradually introduced. After analysis of the cellular reactor, the interaction between the cell and its environment is treated in chapters concerning mass transfer and design of bioprocesses. Finally, the complex subject of scale-up is presented.
The book combines, in a rather unique way, a quantitative treatment of physiology at the cellular level with a treatment of the bioreactor and interaction between the cellular reactor and the bioreactor. Many examples and problems are used to illustrate important concepts in the text.

    Review:

This book gives a complete picture.

I am a postgraduate student in biochemical engineering and I am working on modelling of bioprocesses. I have come across this book a little while ago and it changed the course of studies in a very positive manner. The most important characteristic of this book is that it encompasess the complete spectrum of topics required to thoroughly understand the fundementals of bioprocesses. Consistant nomenclature and mathematical expressions used throughout the book helps the reader to grasp rather comlicated inter-relationships between relatively distant topics much easily. At times the book requires a somewhat competent background in biological sciences and engineering to fully digest everything offered but once the reader adapts to the authors' style the book becomes a very valuable reference.

    Review:

Excellent book with a mathematical approach

This book is an excellent book for graduate students in biochemical engineering or for students of chemical engineering. It describes models such as metabolic flux analysis and metabolic control analysis. Furthermore mass transfer in fermentors and modelling of fermentors is described in great detail. The book is rather heavy to digest, but when you are through it, it is invaluable

    Amazon.com
Inheriting the mantle of revolutionary biologist from Darwin, Watson, and Crick, Richard Dawkins forced an enormous change in the way we see ourselves and the world with the publication of The Selfish Gene. Suppose, instead of thinking about organisms using genes to reproduce themselves, as we had since Mendel's work was rediscovered, we turn it around and imagine that "our" genes build and maintain us in order to make more genes. That simple reversal seems to answer many puzzlers which had stumped scientists for years, and we haven't thought of evolution in the same way since.

Why are there miles and miles of "unused" DNA within each of our bodies? Why should a bee give up its own chance to reproduce to help raise her sisters and brothers? With a prophet's clarity, Dawkins told us the answers from the perspective of molecules competing for limited space and resources to produce more of their own kind. Drawing fascinating examples from every field of biology, he paved the way for a serious re-evaluation of evolution. He also introduced the concept of self-reproducing ideas, or memes, which (seemingly) use humans exclusively for their propagation. If we are puppets, he says, at least we can try to understand our strings. --Rob Lightner --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

    Review
'buy this book, read it and recommend it to your students...There is still nothing else quite like it. Not only are the new chapters and endnotes worthy additions to the original, but the 1976 text comes up as fresh as a primrose and, in its way, nearly as perfect.'l Animal Behaviour
'Learned, witty and very well written...Exhilaratingly good.' Peter Medawar in The Spectator
'This book should be read, can be read, by almost everyone. It describes with great skill a new face of the theory of evolution.' W.D. Hamilton, Science
`Dawkins demonstrates that complex, theoretical or mathematical ideas can be expressed rigorously, in plain English. The book remains an excellent way for those who have not been trained in evolution to understand modern arguments.' Trends in Ecology and Evolution
`An essential and value-for-money purchase for all biological libraries.' Journal of Applied Ecology
`Richard Dawkins is one of a rare breed - a scientist with the gift of the good writer. He has succeeded here in conveying theories of neo-Darwinism with the excitement of a mystery story... He has revelled in pushing the novelty of language and metaphor to the brink, and has ended up with a new way of seeing, which can in its own right come full circle and make an original contribution to science. At the same time, he has produced a book which is highly readable both for the layman, without any note of condescension, and for the expert, giving hima new way of looking at familiar ideas.' Alternatives to Laboratory Animals
'A splendid example of how difficult scientific ideas can be explained by someone who understands them and is willing to take the trouble.' The New Yorker
'What is so refreshing about Dawkins is that he has confidence in the scientific method, in the testing of beliefs to destruction, no matter how cherished they may be' Benjamin Woolley, The Listener
    'influential' The Sunday Correspondent
'An entertaining look at evolution for the general reader.' Publishing News

Electroporation and Sonoporation in Developmental Biology
    By Harukazu Nakamura

    Publisher: Springer
    Number Of Pages: 300
    Publication Date: 2009-03-01
    ISBN-10 / ASIN: 4431094261
    ISBN-13 / EAN: 9784431094265

    Product Description:

In ovo electroporation is an epoch-making achievement in the study of developmental biology. With this method, experiments can be carried out in gain and loss of function in desired tissue at any desired stage in chick embryos. Introduction of a tetracycline-regulated gene expression system and a transposon system has further extended the potential of the method, making it possible to obtain long-term expression and to turn on and off a gene of interest. It is now applied to mice, aquatic animals, and even to plants for the study of developmental biology and for other purposes. In this book, the application of electroporation in many embryonic tissues and organs is introduced, with some chapters that deal with gene transfer in adults. Sonoporation, another useful tool, using ultrasonic waves instead of electric currents, for gene transfer to mesenchymal tissues is also introduced.

    Microbiology of Oceans and Estuaries
    By E.J.Ferguson Wood

    Publisher: Elsevier
    Number Of Pages: 331
    Publication Date: 1967-08
    ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0444407561
    ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780444407566

    PREFACE
The publication of this book so soon after my Marine Microbial
Ecology is an indication of the rate of progress of the study of
marine microbes. It is also an indication of world interest in the
oceans as a source of food and other requirements for a world with
an exploding human population, and the realization that the microbes
and their behaviour control the food web in the ocean. I have
endeavoured to consider the taxonomy and nutrition of marine
microorganisms in more detail than I did in my previous book, and
have reverted to an earlier interest that I had in the economic implications
in marine microbiology. These, as well as the role of microbes
in the food web of the seas, are of great importance to humanity, and
their effects will increase as we turn more and more to the oceans
    for our subsistence.
I cannot at this moment entertain the optimism of some that we
shall, in measurable time, be able to farm the oceans. Me have not
yet, except in isolated areas such as Java and Japan, succeeded in
farming our estuaries with any degree of success. Even in these
places problems of efficiency arise. As for the oceans, our ignorance
is so colossal that we have barely touched on the exploitation of
existing resources despite the warnings of some students of so-called
population dynamics in the oceans. It is our lack of understanding
of marine biology and not our fishing efforts that is limiting our
    ocean fisheries.
My sincere thanks are due to my colleagues Drs. J. S. Bunt,
    s. H. Hunter and Claude E. ZoBell for some valuable suggestions
and criticisms. Their help is greatly appreciated. I wish especially
to thank my secretary, Mrs. Claire Edelstein for her assistance in
the preparation of the manuscript for publication. She has been
particularly helpful with suggestions resulting in a more readable
    treatise.

Marine Toxins as Research Tools (Progress in Molecular and Subcellular Biology / Marine Molecular Biotechnology)
    By Nobuhiro Fusetani, William Kem

    Publisher: Springer
    Number Of Pages: 259
    Publication Date: 2009-03-01
    ISBN-10 / ASIN: 3540878920
    ISBN-13 / EAN: 9783540878926

    Product Description:

Marine organisms produce a wide array of toxins, many of which are not only structurally unusual, but also show potent and interesting modes of action. Since the discovery of tetrodotoxin, a pufferfish toxin, as a potent and selective blocker of Na+ channels in 1964, it has been widely used as a research tool in pharmacological and physiological research. This has led to the identification of a number of important biological functions for Na+ channels. In recent years, much biological research has been carried out at molecular and cellular levels, and therefore selective inhibitors of enzymes and selective antagonist/agonists of receptors and channels have become increasingly important research tools. Accordingly, interest in using such compounds as reagents has increased. Marine toxins are some of the most popular research tools and have already contributed much to our understanding of biological processes and disease mechanisms.
