Information technology plays an essential role in this process.

    Current manufacturing systems are collections of complex systems or subsystems operating in distributed collaborative environments involving software, hardware, humans, and organizations. It is crucial to keep a balance between the technical aspects of automation and the human and social facets when applying information technology in industrial applications, particularly with the rapid advancements in manufacturing systems. However, in order to create appropriate frameworks for exploring the best synergies between humans and automated systems, there are still numerous issues in terms of processes characterization, modeling, and development of adequate support tools. BASYS conferences have been developed and organized to promote the development of balanced automation systems in an attempt to address these issues.

    The first BASYS conference was successfully launched in Victoria, Brazil (1995), and then the following conferences were held in Lisbon, Portugal (1996), Prague, Czech Republic( 1998), Berlin, Germany (2000), Cancun, Mexico (2002), and Vienna, Austria (2004).

    BASYS'06 is the 7th edition in its series. This book contains three invited keynote papers and forty-nine regular papers accepted for presentation at the conference. All together, these papers will make significant contributions to the literature of Intelligent Technology for Balanced Manufacturing Systems.

    Bain & Company launched a multiyear research project in 1993 to gather facts about the use and performance of management tools. Our objective was to help inform managers about the tools available to them and provide them with:
    An understanding of how their current application of these tools and subsequent results compare with those of other organizations across industries and around the globe;
    The information they need to identify, select, implement and integrate the right tools to improve their company's performance.
    Over the past 14 years, we have completed 11 surveys, assembling a database that now includes 8,504 respondents from more than 70 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

    This year, we received 1,221 completed surveys from a broad range of international executives. We also conducted personal follow-up interviews to further probe the circumstances under which tools are most likely to produce desired results.

    We focused on 25 of the most popular tools and techniques. To qualify for inclusion, a tool had to be:
    Relevant to senior management
    Topical (as evidenced by coverage in the business press)
    Measurable
    We defined these tools in a booklet entitled Management Tools 2007, An Executive's Guide and mailed the booklets and surveys to senior executives around the world. Surveys were also conducted online in partnership with EIU.com.
