    Summary: Perhaps the best non-technical overview out there

    This is perhaps the best of the non-technical treatments out there of RT that require some mathematical literacy but no higher math like calculus. I read an earlier edition of this book almost 30 years ago when first in college, after reading one of the non-mathematical books, and it really opened my eyes to some of more advanced and technical aspects of the theory. Yes, there is considerable math in the book, but it's all algebra, no calculus is needed. Born covers all the important facets and aspects of the theory, without skipping over the more difficult concepts.

    Years later, when my mathematical skills were more developed (I was up thru advanced calc and a year of differential equations), I went to the trouble (although I was just a biology major), of reading one of Born's books on Optics, which was quite fascinating. It brought back memories of the earlier, more readable relativity book, since I wasn't quite up to the level of his book on Optics, but then it's always good to try to stretch your mind a bit. But Born was such a great presenter that I struggled through the book despite the overall level of technical difficulty. I find optics for some reason the most interesting of all the areas of physics that I have tried to learn something about, perhaps because of my graduate work in the neurophysiology and biophysics of visual perception, to which it has some relevance.

    But getting back to this book, you won't find the math too daunting if you just remember some high school algebra. I learned more from this book than any other popular treatment, of which I've probably read half a dozen. Overall, a great intro to the subject and probably the most unstintingly detailed in coverage of the more difficult ideas.



    Summary: The Lament

    Dr. Einstein oft lamented that so few really understood his theories. He said that perhaps there was one or maybe two people that understood. It seems to me Max Born must be one of them. His work simplifies as much as possible without sacrificing the level of knowledge needed to grasp the topic and begin to see its implications. It is a complex topic but Max Born rises to the occasion to give us at least a glimpse into this important subject.



    Summary: If you only have one physics book
    Rating: 5

    This little book is a complete delight; if you can only take one physics book to bed with you at night, this might be it. Born reviews much of classical mechanics and E&M, and gives a great introduction to special relativity. There is a bit more on the history of ether than I really wanted to see, but that aside, this a wonderful, comprehensive, handy (not big and heavy) and inexpensive book. I highly recommend it.

    The book starts with an interesting and simple overview on Mechanics and Electromagnetism. The basic concepts of SR are presented, like Lorentz Transformations, space contraction, time dilatation, velocities addiction and the well known "E = mc2". It ends with a small introduction to GR.

    The notation is not quite usual, so don't be surprised to read "K = mb" for the usual "F = ma". Anyway, read it if you are young (I read it right after my "Sweet Sixteen") or if you want reduced knowledge of the matter.



    Summary: A Gem
    Rating: 5

    At times notation can be a distraction, at other times notation can cause confusion, as in E&M most notably. Max Born's book is a gem and if you can get around the mild distractions and focus on the ideas then you may even get around the paradoxes in Relatively, where "common sense" is a distraction.
    Some gifted people can write and explain well the most complex ideas some cannot. Max Born succeeds one of the best popular books on Relativity.

    "This book is widely recognised as a classic. It remains the best introduction to the algebraic topology of vector bundles, more specifically to the "Characteristic Classes" associated with the names of Euler, Stiefel and Whitney, Chern, and Pontryagin. The book also contains a lovely treatment of Thom's cobordism theory, and the appendices give brisk accounts of singular homology and cohomology, as well as the Chern-Weil Theory."

    Milnor's writing is, as always, exceptionally clear and concise. Foundational material for any geometry student. Every mathematician should own this. Every geometer should study it.



    Summary: how many stars??

    I read this page to see how Milnor's book could average only 4 stars. I found two unfair, but intelligent, 2/3 star reviews apparently by physicists, miffed that a masterful 50 year old book on the foundations of the topic, does not provide a history of their invention, and a survey of their current use in physics. If a book serves its own and its author's purpose wonderfully well, but does not serve yours, that is your fault, not the author's. As a hint, it is in the Annals of Math series, not the Handbook for Physicists series. Please read the chapter on "obstructions", p. 139. There Milnor succintly provides exactly the interpretation requested, and a reference to the classic text by Steenrod.

    The most important construction on a smooth manifold is its tangent bundle, and the basic question is whether smooth never zero vector fields exist. The subject begins with the theorem of Poincare & Hopf: a never zero vector field exists if and only if the topological euler characteristic of the underlying manifold is zero. For a polyhedron, this euler characteristic is the number V-E+F = vertices - edges + faces. Thus the most basic characteristic class is the euler class. Briefly, the others measure existence of sequences of independent vector fields. In 1957 their existence, construction and properties were clouded, and Milnor cleared this away once for all in these notes, published by demand and gratefully received by [almost] everyone. This is a great book, and a 2 star review only serves to rate ones own qualifications to appreciate it. I.e. these reviewers are rating not the book but its suitability for their own narrow interests. For another short introduction try the chapter in the book by Bott & Tu.

    Coming from a physics point of view, I did not find this exposition the most useful. It is rather formal and the ordering isn't that natural for a physicist. There is very little effort expended on examples to build intuition.
    Nevertheless, it may be the only game in town. I haven't looked into what other books are available. I do know that the ones I have seen intended for physicists are pretty thin.

    The point to be made here is that M&S and books comparable to it ( I can think of those by Morita, off hand) are written in a style amenable to mathematicians. The purely formal, albeit axiomatic, approach survives as it appeals more to purists than to physicists. There's really nothing lacking in MS: although dated, it's very readable, requiring only a minimum of prerequisites, and this is what makes it attractive, with an appeal to a wide spectrum of audiences. Physical applications are bountiful, and they can be sought elsewhere in the literature.

    On the history of algebraic topology, have a look at the monographs of Dieudonne.

    The learning of an area of mathematics especially at the level of this book can be a time-consuming affair depending on the depth in which one wants to understand the results. A formal and computational understanding of mathematics takes considerably less time than a thorough in-depth understanding, which requires careful thought and minute attention to detail. Very rarely do modern textbooks and monographs in mathematics attempt to convey to the reader this type of understanding, and this book is no exception. It emphasizes the axiomatic and formal machinery behind the theory of characteristic classes, but does not attempt to show the underlying motivation and intuition behind these very important objects. I took a course in advanced algebraic topology which used this book as a text, have read and studied the book many times, and worked out every problem in the book, but it took a very time-consuming literature search to reach a level of understanding that I thought acceptable. The theory of characteristic classes permeates many different areas of mathematics, and has found its way into physical applications in quantum field theory and string theory. Most of the physicists I have talked to who work in these areas are able to compute effectively physical results that involve the use of characteristic classes, but all of them voiced the opinion that they did not really understand exactly what was going on behind the scenes.

    It would have been very helpful if the authors of this book, prominent mathematicians in their own right, would have given an historical motivation for this subject, and one that emphasizes the need for characteristic classes in the study of non-trivial vector bundles. In the chapter on Stiefel-Whitney classes in particular, a set of four axioms that must be satisfied by these classes is given, and only later do the authors show that objects can be defined that will satisfy the axioms. It is not helpful to merely delineate the algebraic relations that these classes satisfy as a consequence of the axioms. What is needed is a series of explanations, starting from the simplest and proceeding to the more complex, that will give the reader an appreciation of just how these objects were discovered and later formalized mathematically. Physicists in particular must have this kind of appreciation in order to better use these concepts in developing new physical theories.

    Such a criticism can be leveled against the rest of the book also, for the chapters on Chern classes, Pontryagin classes, and Euler classes are purely formal and not written for the person desiring a complete understanding. The only chapter that most closely approximates one that gives a fairly good intuitive, geometric understanding is the one on combinatorial Pontryagin classes. The authors work with cohomology over the rational numbers and over geometric complexes. They don't however show how topological invariants can be captured by this approach, but instead give a reference, disappointingly.

    Unfortunately I do not know of a book that will assist the person genuinely interested in understanding in-depth the theory of characteristic classes. To gain such an understanding will involve a time-consuming review of the literature on the subject, this literature beginning essentially in the 1930's. Such an undertaking is worth it however, for the theory of characteristic classes is fascinating, and its application to physics even more so.
